There are 2 institutes working under the guidance of the Division: JSC “Volga Research Institute for Hydrocarbon Feeds” (VNIIUS) and “Russian Research Institute for Flow meter Survey” (VNIIR). Scientific Council on “Chemistry and Chemical Technology” functions in the Department; it is combined with “Tatneftekhiminvestholding” and chaired by Prof. Dyakonov, and Prof. Yarullina.

The members of the Division carry out fundamental and applied investigations in the following priority areas of modern chemistry:

• Chemistry in Oil Production and Refining (Prof. Mazgarov, Prof. Romanov, Prof. Barabanov).

• Synthesis, Structure and Reactivity of New Organic and Hetero-Organic Compounds with Practically Useful Properties (Prof. Konovalov, Prof. Galkin, Prof. Batyeva). 

• Physiologically Active Substances for Medicine and Agribusiness (Prof. Konovalov, Prof. Nuretdinov).

• Nano- and Supramolecular Chemistry, New Polymers and Composites (Prof. Konovalov, Prof. Saifullin, Prof. Barabanov).

• Advanced Resource and Energy Saving Chemical High Technologies of New Generation (Prof. Dyakonov, Prof. Akhmadiev, Prof. Garifullin, Prof. Ziyatdinov, Prof. Madyakin, Prof. Marchenko).

The research activity of the Division resulted setting new fundamental patterns in organic, hetero-organic, physical and supramolecular chemistry; creating nanodisperse metal-matrix composite coatings; elaborating new highly effective technologies and devices for chemical, petrochemical and oil industries; developing energy-rich materials with economic and dual purpose; obtaining new unique compounds with wide range of application in chemical technology, pharmacy and agribusiness.

As a striking example of an important national economic development with a significant economical effect the researchers under the guidance of Prof. Mazgarov invented the first in the world catalytic processes – DMC and DMD for desulphurization of light oil, gas condensate, gas naphtha and gasoline. This technology is used in Tengiz, where they refine 13 million tons of oil annually. Licenses for these technologies and their modifications are sold to Islamic Republic of Iran, where more than 20 industrial-scale plants are planned to build. In the factories of Russia, Kazakhstan and Bulgaria there are more than 30 industrial-scale plants of DMC and DMD. All the plants are stably provided with IVKAZ catalysts produced in Kazan. These catalysts exceed other world analogues in activity and stability 2-4 times.

Tatarstan scientists developed highly effective pyrotechnic compositions of different purposes: colored lights, pesticide, for intensification of oil production and others. The energetic materials find wide range in application in different areas of economy and there are several defense enterprises in Tatarstan, which are able to produce them. Considering this fact it is advisable to develop a comprehensive program on using condensed materials in the republic (intensification of oil production, combating agricultural pests and diseases) involving scientists, agribusiness workers.

The Division members completed a major series of fundamental and applied research in the field of supramolecular chemistry based on calixarenes; among the phosphorus-sulfur-organic compounds they found ash-free multi-functional additives for lubricating oils with high inhibitory activity in carbon dioxide corrosion of iron, which 20-30 times exceed the activity of foreign inhibitors Coretix-1001 (USA) and Dodigen (FRG) that are widely used in the petroleum industry. The protective effect of our additives increases with temperature unlike most currently used inhibitors and is based on the adsorption of nanoparticles on the active centers of iron surface. The researchers developed and implemented new and efficient technologies DMD-2M for desulphurization of oil and petroleum products. They fruitfully develop a new research area “Chemistry and Geochemistry of the Residual Oil”, which is highly relevant for the fields in the late stage of operation.

TAS researchers developed and implemented new aerobic and anaerobic technologies of water production from waste plant and animal. In this respect there was created a venture for producing biogas energy complexes. 

To coordinate the use of scientific potential of the Division and experience in the field of nanomaterials and nanotechnology there was created the Center for Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology.
